NYE 2013 – Resolutions from Jaipur, India.

Getting to Jaipur was a 26 hour journey from my bed in Srinagar, Kashmir. It involved a 10 hour jeep ride that was quite likely the worst ride of my life. I sat on a hard bench seat where I didn’t have room to move my legs or sit up straight. I would bounce up and hit my head regularly as we drove through the narrow, bumpy, and winding roads. The only saving grace of that experience was that I got to the train station with 15 minutes to spare after seeing hundreds of monkeys on the side of the road. And I didn’t vomit along the way.

“Namaste, bitches! I’m a monkey”

After that I boarded my first train in India from Jammu to Jaipur. It was a 14 hour train trip in the AC3 class. I had the top of three berths to sleep in. I had a cup of chai and a small bit of food, and tried to lay down to sleep. I was kept awake for a couple hours of being sick. I had both a bad cold that got worse when laying down, and a touch of diarrhea. As I hung on tightly over the squat toilet shitting my brains out, I was being tossed around by the movement of the train thinking to myself, “this is India.”

I arrived at my guesthouse at about 10:30AM, had a delicious breakfast of fresh fruit, yogurt, and honey, and then promptly slept for the next 5 hours feeling quite refreshed afterwards. I showered away my filth, put on my favorite jacket, and went out strolling through Jaipur on foot with no idea where to go. After about 2 hours of that I headed back to the guest house where I met some lovely Australians. We had beers and chatted, went to a local bar, and then enjoyed cake and fireworks with our gracious host, Raman.

My New Years resolution(s)

Another year has passed and on this symbolic night of change, my resolution is to be a better version of myself. I want to give more, expect less, and say ‘thank you’ more often. I want to live with passion and let that resonate in everything I touch. I want to taste the sweet nectar of life and dish it out in ladles to everyone I meet. I want to be humble, selfless and thoughtful. I want to connect myself with a deeper purpose than just simply existing as a biological structure meant to eat, breathe, and fuck.

I want to be alive in ways I’ve never lived before. I want to learn new things about new subjects from new people and their new ideas. I want to grow with outstretched arms like a tree reaching for the heavens above. I want a constant breath of fresh air that fills my lungs with proof that I’m alive. And I want to plant seeds along the way that continue to grow after I’m gone.

I resolve to shed self doubt, self pity, and self loathing. I will uplift myself to be positive, connected, and aware. I will not fill my head with gossip and noise put out for mass consumption. I will be conscious of my actions and efforts in this life. I will strive for ways towards self improvement, satisfaction, and fulfillment. I will spend more time doing things that I love and less time comparing myself to others.

I resolve to give like I have nothing to lose knowing that we’re all each other anyways. What goes around comes around and what is a gift for you is a gift for us all. I want to water the tree of abundance and give away the fruits to the hungry. I want to push myself every day by saying, “god dammit, you’re alive, do something for the world.”

I want to live with purpose and do things that I’m proud of. I want to lead by example and be a role model for anyone who needs a role model like me. I want to inspire people who think I’m inspiring and be inspired to do more of whatever that is. I want my story to be told like folklore from people’s memories of me. I want to do something worth remembering.

I resolve to show the world that we are not powerless in how our existence is played out. We as human beings have the superpower we’re born with to change the world however we see fit. If we can dream it, and we can believe in it, we can do anything imaginable.  I want to be living proof of that.

I want to change the world.

What do you want to do?
