Fremont Solstice Parade 2013

What is the Fremont Solstice Parade?

The Fremont Solstice parade started in 1989 by Barbara Luecke and Peter Toms to encourage creativity and community.  It takes place in  the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle, Washington.   This once separate city that was annexed to Seattle in 1891 was once considered the center of the counter culture.  This annual parade takes the eclectic artist vibe of the area and turns it into human powered displays of art. No logos or words are allowed to be displayed during the parade in order to keep commercialism out of it.

The 2013 Fremont Solstice Parade took place on June 22nd with the famous naked solstice bike ride happening beforehand to kick off the party.  The parade is there to welcome in the official start of summer in Seattle and melt away the cursed Seattle Freeze.  The parade brings out people from all ages, cultures, and genders represented in Seattle.  It encourages people to dress up and express who they are as loudly as they want through acts of theater, music, and dance.

The mission of the day was photography.

I was hoping for a visually stimulating environment so I could put my skills to the test to capture some parade action.  My kit included my Pentax K-5, Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f/3.5 (komine build), Pentax-A 50mm f/1.7, and my Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6.  Most of the work was done with my Vivitar.  It was challenging and fun trying to capture the action of a parade with a fully manual lens.  Having to focus, adjust aperture, and use stop down meter while everything is moving was fun!

73 Photos from the Fremont Solstice Parade 2013!

I blew a couple shots because I couldn’t get the settings right quickly enough, but I am overall happy with my results.  Hopefully I can share this with enough people that maybe some of the people in the shots can get a look at the work.  I love being able to give people in the photos the chance to see them.  So if you recognize someone, head over to facebook and tag them in the photo!
